Vimeo was born in 2004, created by a group of filmmakers who wanted an easy and beautiful way to share videos with their friends. Word started to spread, and an insanely supportive community of creators began to blossom. Nightjar Travel started out essentially as a travel planner for the family. Make no mistake, there are a number of great specialist sites out there. So we set out to build a site that would do just that. Then, having built a comparatively advanced mapping tool for the Destination Guide, we used it to create a set of journeys that cover all the classical self drive routes across South African. With this in mind, we added an online travel magazine to the mix. We are also very pleased to have the support of a number of top South African travel magazines, in the form of a monthly article on our 'magazine stand'. There are essentially three types of place to stay. And there are those few great places where you are welcomed in and treated as a friend, cliché though this may now have become, and where paying at the end of your visit is a pleasurable surprise. And of course there is a third category where paying for your stay is a disagreeable inevitability! At the other end of the spectrum, the very cheapest places are often cheap for good reasons. Equally, there are places in the book that do not have much in the way of luxury, but easily compensate with unique settings, wonderful views and charming hosts. This may be because of fluctuating prices at different times of year, but also we have tried to predict the anticipated rise in prices over the book's shelf life. Obviously we cannot know what will happen to the value of the rand and prices might fall outside the quoted range. Although South Africa has become substantially more expensive since the first edition of this guide came out 6 years ago, it is still great value on the whole. Do make sure that you are aware what this is if you book in advance. We have only given the child-friendly symbol to those places that are unconditionally accepting of the little fellows. Most owners are concerned about how their other guests will take to kids running wild when they are trying to relax on a long-anticipated holiday. It has not influenced our decision-making about who is right or wrong for the guide and we turn down many more than we accept. We make no claims to god-like objectivity in assessing what is or is not special about the places we feature. Although we visit each place each edition many of the places featured here are small, personal and owner-run. This can evaporate in double-quick time for any number of reasons and standards plummet before we have had a chance to re-evaluate the place.
